The first session of the morning saw Tim Boyce stand in as presenter of the paper "ED Pigments - A new cost effective way to disperse pigments". The planned presenter was to be Ms Chong Su Fah from the Singapore offices of Clariant with Tim Boyce stepping into the job in her absence. Tim commenced with some basic descriptions and definitions relating to the process of pigment dispersion, with emphasis on high performance organic pigments. He then described the processing and philosophy behind Clariant's recently released ED (Easy Dispersing) pigment range. The difference between these new grades and previous offerings from Clariant and others is that the conversion of the pigments occurs as part of the finishing process during manufacture rather than being formed by creating a dispersion of a standard product. By adopting this procedure, Clariant has been able to create a form of the pigment which is binder free and contains low to minimal content of wetting and stabilizing additives.
