In 1833 the French chemist Jean Bap-tiste-Dumas, who we may remember from our school chemistry days had already gained fame through the determination of relative atomic masses by measuring vapour densities, discovered urethane technology. Other sources state that iso-cyanates were first synthesised by Wurst in Germany in 1848. However it was not until 1937 in Germany when Heinrich Rinke, (as part of a team led by Otto Bayer), produced hexane-l,6-diisocyanate (HDI) which subsequently became part of the di-isocyanate polyaddition process to produce polyurethanes. Apparently, this was an attempt to create a new fibre to compete with nylon.
