Almost 35 years after being established in the United Kingdom, manufacturer Kubota has big plans. Howard Sherren looks at its future and its past. In Japan farming is big business, with every person consuming on average 60kg of rice a year - although that's down from 120kg in the 1900s thanks the Western style habit of eating more bread. With rice planted in May and harvested in October, and with a population hitting 12S million, Japanese farmers have a busy year.
