DRIVERS FOR THE METAL INDUSTRY IN THE NEW CENTURY

I consider it to be a great honour and very special privilege to deliver this 41~(st) Presidential address of the Indian Institute of Metals. Today the world, the society we live in, is going through large scale transformation in many dimensions. A host of factors are creating intense pressures on individuals, society and the eco-system: rapidly increasing population, depletion of non-renewable resources, degradation of environment, accelerated speed of production, explosive growth in information technology, far reaching impact of globalisation and finally, the advent of knowledge-based era. The metallurgical fraternity has to take serious note of these developments and devise ways and means to find out solutions and approaches to survive and grow. Technology will play a key role - appropriate technology for the particular industry. Cost competitiveness, environment friendliness, building a product profile based on the unique characteristics of the metal and its alloy would be the hallmark of success.
