EXXARO: Pattern Has Been for Coal to Generate Profit to Offset Losses on MinSands

Exxaro Resources (headquartered at Pretoria, South Africa), the world's third largest TiO2 feedstock supplier, recently issued a stark profits warning. The company has decided not to proceed with plans to develop the Fairbreeze mineral sands mine as a replacement for the existing Hillendale/Braeburn mine, where reserves are nearing exhaustion. Because that will mean a lack of captive local ilmenite, Exxaro will shut down the mineral separation plant and the ilmenite smelter at Empangeni.
