Sensitivity of different liver parameters for the diagnosis of hepatopathies in the cat

The history and physical signs of liver diseases in cats are often inconsistent and nonspecific. To estimate the sensitivity of different laboratory tests for the diagnosis of hepatopathies the so called liver parameters were determined and the ceruletide test for assessment of liver function was carried out in 43 cats with proven hepatopathy. The highest sensitivity was estimated for plasma ALT activity (67.4%) followed by plasma total bilirubin (63.4%) and fasting serum bile acid concentration (62.8%). The sensitivity for detection of serum bile acids 40 minutes after stimulation with ceruletide was 51.2%. Lower sensitivities were calculated for plasma enzyme activities of AST (50.0%), GLDH (44.2%) and AP (41.9%) and for plasma concentrations ofcholesterol (42.1%) and ammonia (37.0%). The estimated sensitivity of PTT was 35.3%, of PT 17.6% and of fibrinogen (14.3%). The lowest sensitivities were calculated for plasma concentrations of albumin (9.3%) and urea (2.3%). The combination of ALT, ASTand GLDH revealed an increase of sensitivity to 73.8% and the combination of the parameters ALT, total bilirubin and fasting bile acids led to a sensitivity of 90%.
