Nippon Steel To Transport 5 Mt/a Of Brazilian Iron Ore In A Long-Term & Stable Manner

Nippon Steel Corporation (NSC; President MIMURA Akio) announced on June 8 its intention to introduce a twowheel new transport system: the first one to shuttle transport Brazilian iron ore with three new super-large ore carriers and the second to realize a new combination transport to service a new Australia-Europe-Brazil-Japan route, together enabling to transport a total nearing 5 Mt/a of Brazilian iron ore, being long-distanced procurement source. This new system will allow NSC to carry, in a stable manner and during many years to come, the above quantity of iron ore every year, which accounts for 45 percent of 11 Mt/a that it has committed to uptake from Brazil under the existing long-term purchasing contracts. OBATA Toru, General Manager of Raw Materials Division 2 of NSC said: "We regard the Brazil - Japan shuttle transport as a kind of strategical attempt. We intend to disperse relevant risks by involving spot and combination transports."
