Australian Hamersley Iron estimates that exports to Japan in the third quarter (Oct. to Dec.) of 2004 will drop by about 1 to 2 million tons (Mt). The company incurred a large reduction in shipments associated with the aftermath of the large-scale cyclone Monty that hit Western Australia in March this year. In the midst when operations were returning to normal, there occurred a derailment at Hamersley Yandi ore transporting railway in August. Hamersley informs that despite post-accident measures have been already taken, it may continue to affect shipments into the next quarters.
