Utilization of gene mapping information in livestock animals.

This review begins with a brief historical account of the development of linkage maps in cattle, sheep and pigs, and then discusses the following: use of DNA markers in gene mapping; mapping of quantitative trait loci; use of expressed sequence tagsin gene mapping; comparative livestock, human and mouse gene maps; use of transgene and nuclear transfer methods to identify candidate genes; transgenic animals in livestock production.
