ABO blood types are associated with risk of idiopathic venous thromboembolism in the Korean population

The ABO blood group is a major determinant of plasma von Willebrand factor (VWF) and factor VIII (FVIII) levels (1-3). Several studies have found that individuals with the type 0 blood have plasma VWF levels 25% to 30% lower than those with non-0 blood types (4-9). Based on these mechanisms, many studies have reported an association between ABO blood type and the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) (10-16). A meta-analysis of these results showed that the non-0 blood type was associated with a 79% (odds ratio [OR] 1.79, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.56-2.05) increased risk of VTE (3). However, despite the clinical significance of the ABO blood type as a risk factor for VTE in Caucasians, its contribution to the VTE risk in the Asian population has not been studied. To address this issue, we performed a case-control study to investigate the association between the ABO blood types and idiopathic VTE in the Korean population.
