Offshore Technology: A Heavy Industry Overview

This paper reviews both the opportunities and the challenges facing the world's offshore-construction and shipbuilding industries, and within that setting it describes the recent experience, research and innovations of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). In recent years, the engineering capability, project management and construction strategies of the Korean shipyards have greatly improved, enabling them to become the main EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contractors of offshore structures, thanks especially to the innovative ground-build method for ship-type structures. HHI has successfully completed various offshore projects covering construction of various floaters and fixed offshore structures, pipeline installation and platform installation. Many research projects are being carried out in cooperation with leading international research institutes, universities and engineering companies. Another preparation for the future is in the natural gas industries, whose expansion provides shipbuilding industries with a huge opportunity as well as many challenging technical problems.
