When in 1992 MaK introduced the new M 20 engine with a power range from 900 kW to 1710 kW at 900 to 1000 rpm it was the result of an intense internal evaluation process. From the beginning the following targets were set: 1. The design should be transferable, to allow a complete new engine series development. 2. To allow production in Europe, (without the involvement of licensees), the number of parts and the time for production had to be reduced radically. 3. Ease of maintenance, the simplicity of the engine concept had to result in a drastically reduced overhaul time at extended maintenance intervals. 4. In-house production, major engine components like engine blocks, cylinder heads, con-rods, valves had to continue to be manufactured in MaK. 5. IMO exhaust gas regulation, the bore to stroke ratio beginning with 1:1.5 should allow to fulfil these rules without any external measures and without the need to increase the fuel consumption.
