摘要

In his book, Anthropology and the Bushman (Barnard 2007), socialanthropologist Alan Barnard incorporates the intellectual con-tributions of several archaeologists and rock art scholars intothe collective understanding of who the Bushmen were andare. Barnard's commentary has done a service to all scholarswith interests in the Southern African past. While it is unfair todwell on what an author has missed, the reading of this bookelicited a strong sense of what is missing from this admirablyinterdisciplinary discussion of the scope of "Bushman studies,"and from much of the literature cited therein. Missing is theprocessual information that arises through archaeology andbioarchaeology from the assessment of Bushman ancestors.Bioarchaeology is the study of human remains from archaeo-logical sites, understood and interpreted by considering thecontext from which they derive (Larsen 1997; Roberts 2009).New knowledge from those fields should be incorporated intothe understanding of the broader scholarly community.
