IN2016.IT will be five years since the default retirement age of 65 was abolished. This meant, after 1 October 2011, employers that forced employees to retire could find themselves on the wrong end of an age discrimination claim. The only way they could avoid a sizeable payout would be to demonstrate the retirement was justified. However, there was great uncertainty as to what that entailed, resulting in many practices simply abandoning a retirement age completely.
