Plans to strengthen dog breeding legislation in Wales

THE Welsh Assembly Government has announced its intention to introduce new regulations on the breeding of dogs. Among other things, they could tighten the criteria for the licensing of dog breeding establishments, and require all puppies originating from these establishments to be microchipped. The new regulations, which will replace the Breeding of Dogs Act 1973, will be based on proposals made by a 'task and finish' group that has been reviewing the current legislation governing the breeding of dogs. The group was commissioned by Elin Jones, the Welsh rural affairs minister, last year, and it recently submitted its report.
