Canine cheyletiellosis is caused by Cheyletidla species, typically Cheyletidla yasguri (Foxx and Ewing 1969), and the mites are highly contagious (Scott and others 2001). Successful treatment with a variety of insecticides, such as fipronil (Chadwick 1997), milbemycin oxime (While and others 2001) and ivermectin (Paradis and Villeneuve 1988), has been reported. Selamectin (Revolution; Pfizer) is a novel scmisynthetic avermectin produced by Streptomyces avennitilis, and is approved in the LSA for heartworm prevention, flea control, deworming, treating canine scabies and controlling infestations with Dermacentor variabilis. This short communication describes the efficacy of selamectin in the treatment of cheyletiellosis in two multidog households. Three breeding colonies in two households were treated. One household (household 1) consisted of nine cavalier King Charles spaniels. The referring veterinarian had identified Cheyletidla mites in superficial skin scrapings from one dog. This dog had beenpruritic for several weeks, as had its owner. The second household (household 2) consisted of eight Pekinese and 20 Japanese chins, as well as one Queensland heeler. Cheyletiella mites had been identified a number of times on different dogs over a number of years; a variety of individual dogs, as well as the owners, were intermittently pruritic, and ivermectin and milbemycin oxime had previously been used to treat all of the dogs. However, cheyletiellosis continued to be a problem despite these therapies.
