Examination of semen from bulls at five Austrian artificial insemination centres for chlamydiae and mollicutes.

In this study, semen from 273 bulls at 5 AI centres in Austria were collected and analysed for chlamydiae and Mycoplasma spp. by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and culture techniques. Chlamydia abortus, C. pecorum and M. bovis were not detected in any sample, while M. bovigenitalium and/or M. canadense were found in a small number of bulls. Ureaplasma diversum was also detected in 34 (12.5%) of the bulls. The frequency of M. bovigenitalium differed between AI centres, while M. canadense and U. diversum did not.
