Inspired engineering during World War Two gave allied aircraft superior engine power and then helped deliver the biggest boost for aviation since the Wright brothers - jet propulsion. In 1940, during some of the UK's darkest days of the Second World War, two deeply significant developments in aero-engine technology began to make their mark on history. One created vital extra power while the other launched into service an entirely new type of power.
