It all began in 1927, when Rolls-Royce decided that it needed to take an active role in the design and development of the installations into which its aero engines were fitted, and not leave this important aspect of aircraft design to the aircraft manufacturers. The initial venture, with a Kestrel-powered de Havilland DH-9a, led to a small Derby-run operation based at Tollerton, near Nottingham, where a small number of aircraft were loaned from the Air Ministry, with pilot and ground crew from the incumbent National Flying Services.
