As part of the Tomlinson reorganisation of hospital services for London, Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital NHS Trust underwent a major reorganisation of services in October 1999. Acute medical and surgical services transferred to the St Thomas' site at Waterloo, leaving the Guy's site free to focus on planned, ambulatory and tertiary care. A shortfall in the number of beds was predicted and more efficient systems of working were required from all departments.
