Turns are just a part of farming whether they are along the edges of fields or part of the landscape. Though most farmers try to have field patterns with straight runs, turns cannot be avoided entirely. With increasingly wider equipment, these turns can cause significant misapplication of inputs. Consider, for example, a sprayer with a 120-foot boom making a turn with a radius of 200 feet. If the sprayer is operating at 15 mph, the outside nozzle is traveling almost 20 mph, while the inside nozzle is moving a little over 10 mph. The flow rate from all of the nozzles is the same, so the outside nozzle would be under applying by 30 percent while the inside nozzle is over applying by the same amount as is shown in Figure 1.
