Another export record set in 2009

For the eight straight year, U.S. scrap paper left the U.S. in record quantities in 2009, according to trade data published by the U.S. Commerce Department, Bureau of the Census. Exports in 2009 totaled just shy of 21 million tons, a 7.5 percent gain compared to 2008 exports of 19.5 million tons. Prices for the material, however, while increasing from month to month throughout the year, never caught up after the year-end 2008 crash, and ended 2009 down an average of 19 percent compared to 2008.
