Plasma Laser Technologies Ltd. has developed a hybrid welding process, one that uses plasma and MIG (metal inert gas) processes, for tube-to-tube but welding applications. The com-I pany and its North American distributor, Welding Solutions Inc., have worked to automate this process for robotic welding. The process, Super-MIG~(TM), is intended for applications such as heat exchangers, building controls, chemical transmission lines, and pipeline construction. Weld quality is critical because most of these applications require 100 percent X-ray inspection, and durability is important because these applications often involve extreme conditions such as open-flame heat sources, weather changes, and dynamic stresses due to weight or pressure. The two companies claim that Super-MIG provides a suitable alternative to GTAW (TIG welding) for such applications, providing quality, durable, low-spatter welds.
