U.S. pipe and tube mills operated at 42.7 percent of capacity in January. This is an increase of 0.6 percent from December. During January last year the average operating rate was 49 percent of capacity. Tyco International Ltd., parent company of Allied Tube & Conduit (Harvey, Ill.), unveiled a plan to split into four independent companies. Allied Tube & Conduit will be part of the company's Fire Protection & Flow Control unit. Tyco stated that this group had revenue of 7.6 billion dollars and operating profits of 1.3 billion dollars in 2001.
