Harold is a tall and heavily built Ceylon Dutch-Burgher. When he stares, his eyes can bore to the back of your mind and dig out your weakness as a planter. He had risen in the management ranks of United Plantations, but after 23 years he decided to resign and now he was in Pamol. When he went to join the Pamol Plantation in Sabah in January 1971, there were questions raised by the junior management if he was going to by-pass many people and take over as general manager. I did not know the answer. AsI was a junior planter too, working in one division of an estate in Johor, I flew to Sabah on holiday and went to the estate to find out.
