The recruitment of coat proteins for transportvesicles (COPI-, COPII-, and clathrincoated)is mediated by the small GTPasesof the ADP-ribosylation factor (ARF) familyof which there are three SAR, 12 ARF, andsix ARL genes in the Arabidopsis thalianagenome (Vernoud et al., 2003). TheseGTPases are themselves recruited byguanidine exchange factors located at thedonor compartments, which convert theminto active GTP-bound forms (Anders andJurgens, 2008). The well-established inhibitorof ARF guanidine exchange factorsis the fungal toxin brefeldin A (Robinsonet al., 2008). Normally, the ARF-GTPasesare located on membranes where transportvesicles are formed (Kawasaki et al., 2005;D’Souza-Schorey and Chavrier, 2006).
