SHAPED charges for military engineering use first entered public consciousness when used to great effect by German glider-borne engineers during the capture of Fort Eben Emael in Belgium on 10 and 11 May 1940. The development of conical and linear shaped charges for military engineering use accelerated considerably during the Second World War, driven by operational necessity and supported by the allocation of considerable resources. In the first of a short series of articles concerning historical British shaped charges, the Author describes and discusses the Charge, Demolition, No.2 "General Wade", likely to be unknown to most of the Journal readership, save keen students of military shaped charge history and Second World War Sapper veterans.
