The Reverend William Smith (1808-1857), DiatomistPart II: Organization and Record of his Research

A brief account of the life of the Reverend William Smith, was given in Part I of this paper (Warren, 2010). Smith was the author of a Synopsis of British Diatomaceae (Smith, 1853a, 1856b) and had served as a Minister in eight Unitarian Churches before his final appoint-ment late in 1854 to the Chair of Natural History at Queen's College, Cork. His move from loca-tions in the cooler north to the warmer south of the country were partly for health reasons and partly for a better salary. The latter and/or private means were important factors in this pre research-grant period. In Part I we learned how he secured a loan (Carruthers, 1862), reached agreement with Smith & Beck (Smith, 1851a) that they would publish the Synopsis at their expense, and augmented his salary with sales of preparations. Here, in Part II, we consider the organization and the output of that research.
