摘要

As discussed in Parts I and II of this paper (Warren, 2010 a,b), the Reverend William Smith served for fifteen years (1830-1845) in Scotland and the north of England as a Unitarian minister before moving south for a further nine years (1845-1854), in the hope that milder southern winters might ease the pain he suffered from gout. His first recorded interest in diatoms was in 1845 when he was at Torquay, but it is during his more permanent ministries at Wareham and then at Lewes that he rose to prominence as a diatomist. He was the author of the two-volume Synopsis of the British Diatomaceae (Smith, 1853, 1856), and it was the research for that work which led to his appointment to the Chair in Natural History at Queen's College, Cork.
