The European beaver - the management consequences ten years after the first reintroduction to the Czech Republic

Historically extinct in the area, the European beaver (Castor fiber L. 1758) started to expand back to the Historically extinct in the area, the European beaver (Castor fiber L. 1758) started to spread back to the Czech Republic from the populations created by release projects in surrounding countries in the nineteen-sixties. This expansion was further supported by reintroductions in the morava and Odra River basins in 1991, 1992 and 1996. The known beaver groups invaded a variety of suitable habitats and established a population of approximately one hundred families throughout the Czech Republic by 2001. Further work is being undertaken in the preparation of a Management Plan. This will address both beaver conservation, and also potential issues such as the control of beaver damage.
