Infection Rates Comparing Topical Antibiotic Versus Antibiotic-Free Ointment in Blepharoplasty Surgery

Little evidence exists supporting the routine use of topical antibiotic ointment following eyelid surgery. Topical antibiotic ointment, however, is frequently used to theoretically prevent postoperative infections after upper eyelid surgery. Experience shows that infections following eyelid surgery are rare.12 The use of a topical antibiotics is not without risk. Adverse reactions include contact sensitivity, anaphylaxis, the potential for promotion of bacterial resistance, and increased costs.3 This study reports the frequency of allergic reactions and postoperative surgical-site infections following blepharoplasty by comparing patients using topical antibiotic ointment with those using topical lubricating ointment without antibiotic.
