What goes into a carton of milk? Piers Ede Moore meets Will Best to find out. Fanned by the Best family for 68 years, Manor Farm lies in the Cerne valley, near the famous Cerne Abbas giant in Dorset. The 100 hectare farm, which has been managed organically for nearly twenty years, has 80 milking cows with their daughters of various ages, and 120 ewes and their lambs. Wheat is grown for bread. Straw (once converted to quality wheat reed) is sold to local thatchers while cereals are grown as stock feed. During the summer the dairy cows graze pasture with two different types of clover. In the winter they are housed in a large barn with straw bedding and fed on silage. hay and home-grown cereals plus brewers' grains from the local brewery for protein.
