Koreas Exports Likely to Exceed 180 Billion U.S. dollars This Year

With a trade surplus of over 8 billion U.S. dollars, a new record high. Koreas exports are exported to exceed 180 billion U.S. dollars this year with a trade surplus topping 8 billion U.S. dollars. These figures are higher than the governments original estimation made earlier at the beginning of this year at the annual exports of 175 billion U.S. dollars and imports of 167 billion U.S. dollars together with a trade surplus of 8 billion U.S. dollars. If the year-end total of exports surpasses 180 billion U.S. dollars, it will be a new record high. The brisker-than-hoped-for export figures this year were attributed to greater efforts by local companies to sell overseas to make up for sluggish sales at home, ballooning shipments to China and revitalized demand for major items including automobiles despite various unfavorable export conditions caused by the SARS outbreak in China, truck drivers strike and unstable relations between labor and management at home and a drop of foreign exchange rate of the Korean won against U.S. dollar.
