UK Government panders to tobacco industry and lacks social conscience

One of the most important roles of any government is to protect its citizens. However, on May 8, 2013, the UK Government condemned 150000 children per year to a lifetime of addiction, poor health, and for many, premature death. In the days running up to the annual state opening of Parliament, speculation had been made about the contents of the Queen's Speech, in which the government detailed legislative measures it wishesto pass through Parliament overthe next 12 months. A deplorable absence from this year's speech was an announcement to introduce plain packaging for cigarettes.
