A reviewer of a book I wrote nearly 20 years ago, called Breast Cancer (Experience of Illness), which was based on interviews with more than 1000 women, said that reading it so depressed her that she felt like she had been forced to sit through the entire collection of songs by Leonard Cohen. She wondered why I could not have been more positive. The reason was that for most women the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer is an assault on their physical, psychological, sexual, and social well-being, which does not always make for an easy read.
