Anterior apical biopsy helps prostate-cancer detection.

Anterior apical biopsy of the prostate in addition to transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsies improve the detection of prostate cancer, suggests a new study (Urol Oncol 24: 492-95). Jonathan Wright and William Ellis (University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle, WA, USA) show the importance of anterior apical biopsy in the detection of prostate cancer. In addition to six standard biopsies in the lateral plane and four biopsies in the parasaggital plane at the base and midline of the prostate, the researchers also took two biopsies from the anterior apex. Transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsies were then done on 164 men with either an abnormal digital examination or an abnormal prostate-specific antigen (PSA) concentration.
