摘要

In Theoretical Perspectives, the reader is introduced to the epidemiologic evidence of sex trafficking, a form of human trafficking, that de Chesnay labels a "new pandemic." The reader learns that approximately 27 million people currently live in slavery globally, that up to 17,500 persons are trafficked into the United States annually (U.S. Department of State, 2012), and that the criminal exploitation of people is big business, generating more than $32 billion in profits for traffickers each year (de Chesnay, 2013). In this section, the dearth of health care literature describing, explaining, or providing information on how to care for survivors of trafficking is identified. Highlighting this knowledge gap provides the impetus for nurses to address the problem and advocate for transnational and international cooperation to address the issues that contribute to trafficking.
