We all seek success in any number of ways-educationally, financially, professionally, in our family lives, in our communities, in organizations and so forth. Success comes When we achieve the goals we have set for ourselves, and what constitutes success continues to change as we reach new stations in life-for example, getting accepted to dental school, graduating from dental school, setting up a profitable practice and so on. Sometimes we find ourselves pursuing multiple and divergent goals simultaneously, goals that are driven by different motivations, and thus we must make hard choices to achieve a balance between our professional and personal priorities. Such inner conflict is a major source of stress that can affect our nonprofessional lives. Would it be possible to define professional success and reduce this dissonance? And could this definition of professional success also be used to define the care patients should expect from all oral health care professionals?
