IN 1993, Mike Devlin and his wife, Valerie Frick—both avid community gardeners in Camden, New Jersey—attended the first national symposium on children's gardening convened by the American Horticultural Society (AHS). The symposium, known then as theYouth Garden Symposium, turned out to be a life-changing experience for them. "We looked at each other and said 'Wow!'," recalls Devlin, a lawyer who at the time was on the Camden City Council as well as president of the Camden City Garden Club. "We were inspired by the conference, and by Jane Taylor's keynote speech about her Michigan 4-H Children's Garden in East Lansing."
