Short Communication Knowledge about Dengue Fever and Mosquito Control Practices in an Urban slum of Delhi

The present cross-sectional study was conducted with the aim of assessing the knowledge about dengue fever and practices for its prevention followed by the residents of Balmiki Basti, an urban slum of Delhi. After getting informed consent, house to house visits were made for data collection by interviewing the heads of household or the next eldest person aged 15 years or more, in absence of the head at the time of visit. Tools used were (l)a semi structured and pretested schedule pertaining to knowledge on symptoms, signs, transmission, prevention, control of dengue fever and their practices, (2) a check list to record observations on various breeding sites of mosquitoes and presence of mosquito larva. Entomological indices considered were Breteau Index and House Index. (Data analysed using SPSS-Pc version 11. Chi-square test was used for testing significant differences between groups, "p" value <0.05 was considered significant).
