Population pressure and land resources in Nepal: a revisit, twenty years later

The paper notes that from the 1982 study the picture of population pressure in Nepal, could be better captured it it were analysed in light of the unbalanced spatial distribution of both human and land resources on a regional scale rather than on anational scale. Although Nepal as a whole did not seem to be overpopulated in terms of primary production, population exerted a mounting pressure on land resources in the Hill and Mountain regions at the existing level of agricultural development, whereas the Tarai region appeared underpopulated. The 1982 study used data from the 1971 census data, and this paper considers whether the situation has changed since 1971, or more directly, how have the relationships between population and land resources changed over the past 20 years. Accordingly, the principal objective is to undertake a temporal analysis of the changes that have taken place in Nepal's human-land relations since 1971: a revisit 20 years later of the same question posed earlier concerning population pressure in Nepal.
