Near-isogenic wheat lines carrying 9 leaf rust resistance genes (Lrl9, Lr24, Lr25, Lr26, Lr27, Lr35, Lr36, Lr41, Lr42) in 9 Indian hexaploid wheat genetic background were evaluated for rust resistance and grain yield performance. Leaf rust resistance genes Lrl9, Lr24, Lr25, Lr27 were found to be highly resistant both at seedling and adult plant stage, whereas leaf rust resistance gene Lr26 was found to be highly susceptible to most of the rust races tested. Other leaf rust resistance genes, Lr35, Lr41 and Lr42 showed moderate resistance. Leaf rust resistance genes, Lr4l and Lr42 provided a high degree of rust resistance in some near-isogenic lines and moderate degree of resistance in other lines. Expression of high degree of some moderate rust resistance genes in some near-isogenic wheat lines suggest that these genes in combination with already existing genes in the recipient parents might have contributed in exhibiting higher degree of resistance than the donor parents. When compared to treatedcontrol, the grain yield in the constituted lines varied; it showed both positive and negative shift in the grain yield, Near-isogenic wheat lines carrying leaf rust resistance genes, Lrl9, Lr24, Lr26, Lr36, Lr41 and Lr42 showed grain yield on par withthe treated control or exceeding it significantly. Leaf rust resistance gene, Lr27 caused neither yield advantage nor yield depression in any of the near-isogenic wheat lines studied. All the near-isogenic wheat lines that are carrying leaf rust resistance gene, Lr35 showed a reduction in grain yield when compared to respective treated controls.
