To the Editor: Although obesity has been associated with lower resting energy expenditure, it is not well established how this relationship is influenced by the presence of heart failure (HF). The effect of obesity on resting metabolic rate may contribute to improved outcomes of obese patients with HF, a metabolically demanding disease. In this study, we examined the association between resting oxygen uptake (Vo_2) and body mass index (BMI) in patients with systolic HF. Patients with systolic HF (left ventricular ejection fraction <=40%) who underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing between January 1 and December 31, 2006 were included.
