Avoiding unanticipated adverse effects of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 therapy in craniofacial surgery with experiences from spinal applications.

We read with great interest the recent review article on the use of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2) for craniofacial surgery written by Smith et al.1 In an effort to facilitate the clinician's risk-benefit analysis of this emerging technology, the authors presented, among other things, a discussion of possible morbidities associated with its use, with special emphasis on experiences from rhBMP applications in spinal surgery. However, several significant spinal experiences related to this issue were overlooked in the article. Because the experiences will help craniofacial surgeons to better understand the possibility of occurrence and prevention of the hazards related to clinical application of rhBMPs in their patient, we are presenting them here.
