Founded in 1973, the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Administrative Fellowship is considered to be the oldest postgraduate fellowship program in healthcare management in the country. Although it has evolved over the past four decades as hospital and healthcare delivery have grown more complex, at its core, the fellowship program has remained constant in its commitment to providing the nation's most promising master's degree graduates with practical experience to build the skills they need to succeed as healthcare executives. The purpose of this essay is to provide an overview of the MGH two-year fellowship program and describe its recruiting and selection process, intended educational experience, and postfellowship transition. It concludes by sharing the lessons learned by the hospital's management team and the role the fellows play in contributing to the program's continuing success.
