Perspectives of Fellowship Programs: The Cleveland Clinic Experience in Developing Administrative Fellows

The Cleveland Clinic Administrative Fellowship has been a valued management development program for nearly 40 years. In the past 5 years, 100% of Administrative Fellows have been offered permanent post-fellowship positions. Cleveland Clinic's Administrative Fellowship Program is a 12-month postgraduate training program with a project-based orientation that gives the fellows numerous opportunities to participate in projects throughout the organization. The purpose of this essay is to describe the strategies that make the fellowship program successful, including its on-boarding process, competency orientation, mentorship, project management, development agenda, and broad organizational exposure provided to the fellows. The essay concludes with a call for action, encouraging healthcare organizations to partner with graduate programs and develop a greater number and higher quality of postgraduate administrative fellowships to keep the field's talent pipeline robust.
