Twenty-seven years ago, in the very first issue of the Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions (formerly Mobius, A Journal of Continuing Education Professionals in the Health Sciences), Malcolm S. M. Watts, a physician who would later become editor of the journal, wrote:More needs to be known about the CME learner, what takes place at the physician (health professional)-patient care interface, and about how CME influences professional competence and practice behavior, and improves patient care.Interest in CME research is only just beginning and support for it is as yet almost nonexistent.Three short years later, David Gullion and Lucy Ann Gei-selman, representing the same institution as Dr. Watts, the University of California, San Francisco, hosted the Research in Continuing Medical Education Conference,2 a meeting often referred to as RICME I and a precursor to subsequent RICME sessions and Continuing Medical Education Congresses. Attendance at RICME I totaled approximately 100 persons, nearly all of them from Canada or the United States.
