Getting the terms right

IN RESPONSE TO calls from the construction industry for easier access to standardized information, Standards Australia has launched a major new initiative to harmonise all building terms and definitions. If terms are not adequately defined and understood this can lead to confusion, especially in industries such as building where various sectors have formed their own terminology to communicate. The main objective of the new Glossary of Building Terms [HB 50] is to provide a comprehensive list of terms and definitions for items and concepts relating to the building industry, from the inception stage of a project right through to demolition. Industry input to this project is vital and more than 150 Standards Australia Technical Committees, ranging from Communications Cabling through to the Soils Testing committee have been asked to take part; as well as more than 90 national organisations, by adding and revising terms, relevant to their particular industries.
