Are you sitting down? This is probably like dissing baby seals, but I can't stand cushions. With the return of ornament (good) has come a parade of pillows (bad), whose purpose all too often is to hide a poorly designed couch. If I don't like a sofa, the cushions can't help it, and if I do like a sofa, they're an eyesore. Good bones shouldn't be obscured by puffy extras. Last year, Paola Lenti put shallow pads (not so bad) and narrow throw pillows (bad) on Francesco Rota's shapely outdoor Frame collection, adding superfluous lumps to a perfect line. Another atrocity was committed when Emu covered Paola Navone's gorgeously porous Ivy sofa and armchair with furry ruglets.
