Laser adjusting is a new innovative process for non-contact alignment of pre-assembled systems with the help of actuators. By using a Nd:YAG-laser for welding and subsequent adjusting both may be accomplished. The application fields are the electronic industry, precision engineering, optics and mechatronics. By using actuators in conjunction with a laser a new range of solutions in the field of highly precise adjustment tasks may be achieved. Matching the actuator geometry with the laser parameters allows to achieve an adjustment behaviour resulting in a planar or spatial translation or even rotation. This work discusses in particular the behaviour of the framework actuator by numerical simulation. As a result of the FEM-analysis, the temperature field, the displacements, and the stress and strain behaviour are established. In addition to the numerical calculation an analytical model is developed to further improve the process understanding. As a result, the geometry stiffness has an important influence on the adjustment behaviour. Furthermore, the superposition of the temperature-gradient and the upsetting mechanism is examined by numerical simulations as well as experimental investigations. As a result, the laser pulses have to be applied to the diagonal beam's center as accurately as possible. Furthermore, design rules for the development of actuators and suitable laser parameters for the laser adjusting process are presented.
